Are you thinking about starting a rare coin collection? Collecting coins can be an enjoyable hobby, and it can be a great way to learn about and experience history. There are many places to buy rare coins, including at your local coin shop, at coin shows, and even online. However, before you start buying coins, you'll want to make sure you have all the tools necessary to protect and care for the coins. Coin collecting doesn't require a major investment, but there are a few tools you'll need to get started.
Magnifying glass. One of the first things you'll want to do is record some of the details from your newly acquired coins. That information could include the date on the coin, any serial numbers and official markings, and any other special notations or inscriptions. However, you'll likely find that older coins aren't as easy to read as today's coins. Depending on how old the coins are, they may not have been minted with the same detail and technology that is available today. Also, the coin could have some wear and tear, making it difficult to read.
You can find a simple magnifying glass at your local coin shop or at any number of other stores. Magnifying glasses that you hold in your hand are affordable, but you could spend a bit more and get one that fits over your eye like a monocle.
Coin holders. You'll also need something in which to store your coins. There are a few options available. Many coin shops sell coin books. These are large books with pages that have plastic coin holders. Many books are designed for certain sets of coins, so the pages will be marked with specific dates. Or you could buy a blank one so you can use it for any type of coin.
Another option is mylar flips. These are small, plastic coin holders for individual coins. They don't fit into a book or any other type of container. You simply put the coin in the flip, press it shut, and then store the flip in a drawer or safe. If you have many coins that are similar, such as 50 or 100 wheat pennies, you could buy a coin tube. This is a plastic tube in which you stack the coins. It's a great option if you don't need to see each individual coin in the bunch.
Gloves and felt. Your coins may appear dirty and scratched when you get them. Believe it or not, you want them to stay that way. It shows off their history and authenticity. To keep them in their natural condition, you need to handle them with care. That means preventing contact with your skin, which contains dirt and oils. The best way to do that is to wear cotton gloves when handling the coins. Also, put down a felt cloth on your table if you're going to be laying out your coins. Tossing the coins on a hard surface could lead to more scratches and dents.
